This set allows you to build Big Bentley, the Cars 2 version of Big Ben, as well as 7 other characters from Cars 2: Holly Shiftwell, Finn McMissile (British Intelligence), Mater (average intelligence), Lightning McQueen, The Queen, Miles Axelrod and Professor Z. The small cars were the easy part, Big Bentley as difficult. It required many specialized pieces (not traditional bricks at all) and some features were quite complicated, especially the pulley to hoist Mater.
That was a really cool feature because I like the Lego sets that can actually become toys once you've constructed them, as opposed to just sitting on a shelf collecting dust, or being quickly deconstructed into loose bricks. But certain parts of this were well beyond the skill level of a 4-year-old. I know the box says the recommended age is 7 to 12, but are children at the upper end of that age range really into Cars 2?
I'm not complaining about it, I enjoy building with him, letting him do some, and I do other parts, just echoing a concern I've read elsewhere.
Overall, this is a really awesome set, worth the $50 or $60 because it is fun to build and fun to play with.

Freestyle: Lego Snowman
Another project that I mapped out on Lego's digital design program. Then I got a bunch of white pieces at the Lego store. One night for Hanukkah he got the pieces and some rough instructions, handwritten by me, in one of the plastic Lego store containers. I wanted to be able to give him longer arms but I couldn't find the appropriate brown pieces. I also made the back pure white, so it actually looks like a snowman would from behind, not just a carbon copy of the front.

Freestyle: Lego Menorah
This was another outside-the-box project. Building the base was pretty simple. We made it 4 rows thick so it would be durable, it just required a lot of blue bricks. The candles were trickier, but added to the fun. Each night we built a new candle, and when it was time to light the real menorah, we added an orange square atop our Lego candles for the "flame."

Freestyle: Jack-o-Lantern
We built this one without any directions, not from a set, just went to the Lego store and bought a bunch of orange pieces. It was a little tricky to do the mouth and the eyes but I think they came out ok. It was a cool thing to build in early October and display in the window the rest of the month.

Freestyle: Name Billboard
OK, so Chase didn't help me with this one. I did this by myself one night when he was sleeping. Incidentally, the next night when he went to bed he asked me to "build something cool while I'm sleeping." He knows how to spell his name so he thought this was really cool.

Lego 40020 & 40021 Halloween Sets
These were an awesome gift for Halloween. One package contained the pieces for two spides. The other one contained pieces an instructions for a small bat, ghost and pumpkin. Those three were pretty easy to put together, because they came with a 1 to 1 scale drawing. The spiders were a little harder for him to build himself, because the legs had to be snapped in place. Each bag was only $5 so they were quite cheap.
